Murder Suspect Arrested at Commerce Casino Pleads NOT GUILTY.
Over the past few days, more and more interest has risen about Kang-Hyuk Choi of New York, who was recently arrested at the Commerce Casino in California for the murder of three victims in New Jersey. Investigators arrested Choi after reading information they found in the journal of one of his unsuspecting victims. Han Il Kim had kept an in-depth journal and noted inside that he had stayed with a friend from Valley Stream on Long Island, who would turn out to be Choi.
Mr. Choi was arraigned on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty. Harry Carroll, the State Superior Court Judge, did not set bail for Choi pending further investigation.
Choi is charged with murder and is believed to have stabbed Mr. Kim after they argued and then stuffed his body inside a closet. Choi then stabbed Yoo Bok Kim age 57, Mr. Kim’s mother, and also stabbed Ms. Kim’s brother-in-law, Doo Soo Seo.
The bodies were found on Friday in Tenafly, New Jersey. The residents of Tenafly were shocked when news of the murders hit and everyone was in disbelief. Many could not even remember when the last homicide had occurred in their neighborhood.
The executive assistant prosecutor, Frank Puccio, stated that Choi and Kim had spent time together on May 3rd and 4th, visiting various clubs and then ended the nights at Mr. Kim’s home. Marijuan and white powder residue was found in Mr. Kim’s bedroom. Puccio then stated that on the 4th, Choi stabbed Kim after arguing over money, stuffed him inside the closet, then stuffed the bed with linens to make it appear that Kim was asleep. It was a while later that Ms. Kim went to check on her son and Choi stabbed her and her brother-in-law.
Choi then stole $30,000 and Mr. Kim’s credit cards and drove away in Seo’s BMW 525. Choi checked into a motel in Flushing and had a relative take him to the hospital for wounds that he received during the stabbing. On the 6th, Choi drove the airport, left the vehicle in long term parking, probably leaving with a relative. On the 13th, Choi returned to the airport and flew to California.
It was not until investigators read Kim’s journal that they found details that lead them to Choi. Then it was interviews with people who knew Choi, that led them to California. Choi was found at Commerce casino where he was arrested while visiting the restroom. According to several reports, Choi was a regular at the high rollers table at the Borgata in Atlantic City. According to regulars at the casino, Choi would wager thousands of dollars per hand frequently.
