Phil Ivey Gambles For Blood, Souls, and NBA Finals Games…
June 18, 2008
High Stakes Player Ivey Reportedly Dropped $2 Million on NBA Finals.
In a not-so-surprising story related to the high stakes uber bad-ass Phil Ivey, it looks as if the Jersey native has been spotted at the Rio all week sweating out the outcome of the Lakers-Celtics series in this year’s NBA Finals.
According to the Tao of Poker blogspot:
“By now you know about the rumor that Phil Ivey has a $2 million bet on the Lakers winning the NBA playoffs. With the Lakers down 2-0, Ivey was intensely sweating Game 3. He supposedly greased the guy with the remote to turn off the tournament clock and out the Lakers/Celtics game on instead.
The game started right around 6pm. For the next three hours, Ivey could not sit still. He stood up a lot, paced back and forth, and constantly checked his crackberry. I had never seen so much emotion out of Ivey before. His usual expressionless face that was cool as a tenor sax solo from John Coltrane had disappeared and replaced by intervals of anxiety.”
This has obviously not been a great start to Ivey’s week, especially considering the Lakers were completely owned and obliterated by the Boston Celtics Tuesday night, losing the NBA championship in 6 games. And in case you didn’t know, Phil had already just lost a $200,000 prop bet with Daniel Negreanu a few days ago as well, which just added a little more insult to injury.
Chances of Ivey ever going busto? NEVER….
….when you’re God how can you go broke? Heh.
Other WSOP News: Nikolay Evdakov Running Hot In 2008.
June 17, 2008
Russian Poker Player w/ 6 Cashes in 2008 WSOP!
Russian poker player Nikolay Evdakov has been running very hot in this year’s World Series of Poker. And coming from someone born and raised in freezer-like Russia, that’s pretty solid….
Evkadov has been a silent assassin in the 2008 WSOP, but is not yet a mainstay name since he has yet to make a final table. However, his list of achievements thus far in the Series cannot be overlooked.
Nikolay Evkadov has cashed in the following already:
- $10k Pot-Limit Holdem Event #1 - $49,000 - 12th place
- $1,500 NL Holdem Event #2 - $4,500 - 139th place
- $1k NL Holdem w/ Rebuys Event #5 - $9,800 - 48th place
- $10k Mixed Event #8 - $16,000 - 24th place
- $5k NL 2-7 Draw Lowball w/ Rebuys Event #18 - $26,000 - 13th place
- $5k PLO w/ Rebuys Event #28 - 14th place
At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before this Russian will be at a final table very soon in this year’s World Series. Good luck Nik!

Scott Seiver Wins 2008 WSOP Event #21.
June 14, 2008
Seiver Takes Down $5,000 No Limit Hold Em Championship.
Scott Seiver just took home the gold bracelet in the $5k No Limit Hold Em Event #21 of the 2008 World Series of Poker.
The final table didn’t have any big name pros at it, but there were a few that had some WSOP cashes - and even a bracelet (Anders Henriksson) - to their name. Unfortunately for them, many of the more experienced players did much to improve themselves during final table play - and Seiver capitalized on it big time.
The event ended just minutes ago, with the relatively unknown Seiver taking down the title and the first place prize of nearly $800k!
The final results for this event:
1. Scott Seiver
2. Dave Seidman
3. Ben Sprengers
4. Jacobo Fernandez
5. Rajesh Vohra
6. Chuck Sklar
7. Anders Henriksson
8. Adam Geyer
9. Scott Freeman
Daniel Negreanu Wins 4th Bracelet in Event #20!
June 14, 2008
Team PokerStars Pro Wins $2k Limit Hold Em of 2008 WSOP.
Daniel Negreanu added his 4th piece of WSOP hardware to his collection yesterday, winning Event #20 of the 2008 World Series of Poker. He would best a final table that would include a mix of both online and live pros, mainly Fu Wong, who had finished in 2nd place days earlier in the $10k Stud championship.
D.N. had no problem mowing down his competition and further solidifying his WSOP stature, picking his spots perfectly and having a lot of his hands hold at showdown. The rail following him was huge, and the crowd only got louder and louder as he inched closer and closer to the title.
On the final hand, Negreanu hit a set of 5’s against his opponent Ugur Marangoz, leaving him in the dust as he would be drawing dead when the cards were flipped.
Daniel Negreanu would win $200k+ for his efforts, and join a fraternity of WSOP greats (ie Amarillo Slim and Bobby Baldwin) with 4 or more bracelets.
1. Daniel Negreanu $204,874
2. Ugur Marangoz $126,671
3. David Baker $78,624
4. Richard Li $63,335
5. Fu Wong $51,542
6. Jeremy Kottler $51,542
7. Greg Wohletz $31,886
8. Derek Lerner $25,334
9. Hien Tran $18,782
Vanessa Selbst Wins 2008 WSOP Event #19.
June 13, 2008
Yale Graduate Takes Down $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Event.
Vanessa Selbst has been making quite a name for herself in the World Series of Poker in the past few years.
After making the final table of the 2006 $2k No Limit event, then repeating that feat in the 2007 $5k Heads-Up No Limit event, she would give new meaning to the phrase “the 3rd time’s a charm” when she would make yet ANOTHER final table performance in this year’s $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Event #19.
She mowed over a final table filled with a lot of inexperienced players, with the exception of a few who had cashed in previous WSOP events. Since Selbst herself was no rookie to the World Series felt, she used that confidence and experience to her advantage, winning out against a table filled with men.
Vanessa Selbst would take down Jamie Pickering heads up for her first WSOP gold bracelet and a nice payday of $227,965. Congrats again Vanessa.
1. Vanessa Selbst $227,965
2. Jamieson Pickering $145,459
3. Stanley Statkiewicz $88,062
4. Thomas Schultz $72,004
5. Eugene Todd $59,053
6. Mel Randolph $46,621
7. Craig Natte $36,261
8. Jamie Robbins $28,490
9. Ken Lairson $20,720
Mike Matusow Wins 3rd WSOP Bracelet in No Limit 2-7 Event #18!
June 12, 2008
“The Mouth” Finally Runs Good Against Stellar Final Table.
Mike Matusow took down an impressive final table in the $5k No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball w/ Rebuys en route to winning his 3rd WSOP bracelet. “The Mouth” ran impressively well during this Event #18, beating seasoned pro Jeffrey Lisandro heads up.
Matusow got away from some big hands deep into final table play, and avoiding troublesome spots in one of the respected events among poker professionals. Even though he faced a final 9 that consisted of players such as Barry Greenstein, Erick Lindgren, and Tony G, he persevered to take down the title and a nice paycheck of $537k+.
Two New Yorkers Win 2008 WSOP Gold in Events #16 and #17.
June 12, 2008
Ted Forrest Upset In Heads-Up Play.
Two more WSOP gold bracelets were awarded on Tuesday, with both recipients residing from the Big Apple. And to make things more sweeter for the pair of New Yorkers was that their first WSOP cashes would also results in their first WSOP wins!
Andrew Brown took down high stakes legend Ted Forrest in the $2,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Split 8-or-Better Event #16 to win over $226,000 and the gold bracelet. Had Forrest won this event, he would’ve tacked on bracelet #6 to his already impressively stacked resume.
In Event #17, the $1,500 No Limit Hold Em Shootout, Jason Young outlasted a solid final table en route to a surprise victory. Young would take home over $335,000 for his win!
2008 WSOP Events #14 and #15 Completed.
June 11, 2008

In related news, the $1,000 Ladies No Limit Hold Em Event #15 concluded as well, with a first-time WSOP winner in Svetlana Gromenkova taking home 1st place! Svetlana outlasted a tough final table to win not only the bracelet, but also the $224k first-place prize.
