HR 5767 Initiative Shot Down in Congress - UIGEA Not Overturned.

June 27, 2008

Bill To Stomp UIGEA Curbed in Congress…For Now.

Voting by the House Financial Services Committee took place this past Thursday to review bill HR 5767, which was presented to the committee by PPA representatives hoping to prevent UIGEA from being implemented and enforced.

Unfortunately, the bill was defeated with a 32-32 tie in roll call voting, and was then overwhelmingly shot down when an oral vote was taken.  The number of “Yays” outnumbered the amount of “Nays” when it came when it came to approving the measure into law.

Alfonse D’Amato of the PPA, who also headed the Financial Services Committee, had this to say following the disappointing result of the vote:

“It is disappointing to realize that opponents of this legislation still do not truly understand the intent of the bill. It was clear today that those who oppose this bill chose to focus on emotional and non-germane issues, such as the harmful impact of gambling on children, instead of on the merits of the bill itself.

As it stands, UIGEA is a completely unworkable and unenforceable bill that would do little to address the main concerns of its sponsors – namely, protecting underage and compulsive gamblers as well as cracking down on money laundering. To truly address these issues, the PPA firmly believes that Congress should implement thoughtful and effective regulation of the online gambling industry as opposed to outright prohibitions, which history has shown do not work.”

Quick WSOP Recap of Events 39 Through 43.

June 26, 2008

More 2008 WSOP Bracelet Winners Crowned.

The 2008 World Series of Poker is still chuggin’ along, with more and more gold hardware and cold hard cash being handed out over the past few days.  It’s crazy to think the Series has been running for only a few weeks, yet the prizepools have already exceeded over $100,000,000!

Currently, events  44 through 48 are taking place, with many final tables set to take place this weekend.  However, there were some updates I forgot to get to my loyal readers from events 39 through 43, mainly the final results!

So without further adieu, here are some quick recaps of those events, including the winners and paydays:

$1,500 No Limit Hold Em - Event #39 - Winner: John Woo ($631,656)

$2,500 2-7 Triple Deaw - Event #40 - Winner: John Phan ($151,896)

$1,000 Seniors Event - Event #42 - Winner: Dan Lacourse ($368,832)

Absolute Poker Bad Beat Jackpot Hits For Nearly $1 Million!

June 25, 2008

$996k+ Bad Beat Hit on AP.

One of the more popular additions to any major online poker room - and well, and live card room too - has got to be the Bad Beat Jackpot. It gives players more incentive to play longer, and frankly it’s just one of those exciting moments that people would just love to be apart of when a bad beat is finally hit.

Absolute Poker takes the concept of the Bad Beat Jackpot to a whole new level, and the running tally for the jackpot literally rises right before its players eyes EVERY second!

About a year ago in June was the last time the Bad Beat Jackpot was paid out on AP, and it’s been a long time coming for the next one to come around.

This past Sunday, a player with the online handle RIVERMAN1969 lost with Quad 10’s versus the Quad Queens of BFOXY! Although it was an obvious cooler, the rewards of the “loss” were immense. RIVERMAN earned himself a 32.5% losers share of the $996k+ Bad Beat Jackpot total - which calculated into about $325k! BFOXY, who laid the bad beat down, earned a 16.25% share of the total Bad Beat - which calculated into $163k!

Now you’ll probably notice that the two amounts given to the those two only equals about $488,000 or so. Well, the reason for that is that the remaining cash was divided up amongst the players at the Bad Beat Jackpot table ($1,000 each), as well as the other 88 players who were playing the same type of game and limit where the bad beat took place. The other 10% was put back into the house to restart a new Jackpot.

WSOP Bracelets Being Thrown Around Like Candy Lately!

June 24, 2008

The “Year of the Pro” Brings in MORE Bracelets.

Ok seriously, the WSOP is moving at a pace that has been making MY head spin around faster than a blind push in a No Limit cash game!  It seemed like yesterday that I was just posting results through Event #32 of the 2008 World Series of Poker….and now they’ve given out a bunch more since!

This is why I love WorldSeriesOfPoker.com - because I can just check out the results as they happen live, and see some great commentary and sweet post-final table interviews.  It also gives me a sick little resource to post the final table results and payouts from, and allows my job to be performed at a less stressful pace, lol.

From what I’ve gathered in the past few days, some more Full Tilt Pros have been dominating the WSOP felt yet again - with Layne Flack and David Benyamine both winning WSOP gold bracelets and taking home some great paydays in the process!

Prizepools are approaching the $100 Million mark very fast….and the days are quickly counting down to the pinnacle of it all - THE $10,000 WSOP MAIN EVENT BABY!

Soak it up while you can folks, because it’ll all be over before you blink your eyes.

For now though, enjoy the results from Events #33 through #38 of the 2008 WSOP:

Which Playboy Playmate Poker Player Got Jury Duty?

June 24, 2008

Jennifer “Jennicide” Leigh Gets Jury Duty During WSOP.

JennicideWell it looks like there’s a decent explanation as to why the Playboy playmate and online poker badass Jennifer Leigh has been a no-show in this year’s WSOP.

She has jury duty!

In a blog post that was made on PokerListings, it was explained to the world that “Jennicide” got called to serve just before she was ready to fly up for the 2008 World Series of Poker.

“I have been having a chain of nightmares of being sequestered to a long murder trial, in which I feel sorry for the 11 other jurors that would have to be witness to my bantering and childlike snootiness for the terrible circumstances.

I need to be in Las Vegas during these times! Yet, I am stuck in Delaware! I have to wake up at an unreasonable hour too! Reporting to the courthouse at 8:30 a.m.?!”

It’s not yet clear if she’s made it up to Vegas just yet, but we’re all rooting for the young poker princess to make a few cameo appearances in some of the preliminary events before hopefully making her way to her place at the $10k Main Event!

Poker Players Uniting on Capitol Hill.

June 21, 2008

Poker Professionals Coming Together in D.C.

According to media news site 4Flush.com, “Poker players have become the newest lobby group to target Washington, D.C. With poker, both land-based and online, in a partial legal state in the United States, the Poker Players Alliance is circulating an online campaign headlined by a website with the election themed name Poker 2008.”

The article goes on to talk about the PPA’s efforts to fight the poker ban, and that this year’s upcoming Presidential election could be a swaying factor in getting the UIGEA ultimately overturned.  To many poker enthusiasts, the bill is nothing more than a scare tactic from the U.S. government to get citizens to stop turning to online poker sites for leisure and fun - and that the bill really can’t be enforced by our legislature.

Charles Barkley Has Poker On The Brain - EL oh EL?

June 20, 2008

Charles Barkley Set to Gamble Again - For a Good Cause…

In the past Charles Barkley had stated that he would not gamble for the next couple of years after he was sued this past May by a casino is Las Vegas for not paying up on his $400,000 gambling markers. Barkley was quoted as saying that “for right now, the next year or two, I’m not going to gamble. Just because I can afford to lose money doesn’t mean I should do it.”

Apparently Charles has changed his mind and will be appearing at the 2008 World Series of Poker on July 2nd. A celebrity tournament will be taking place called “Ante Up for Africa” and will raise awareness and money for the Darfur region of Sudan and the crisis that is taking place there. Since 2003, ethnic warfare has taken place in the country and 2.5 million people have been displaced and over 300,000 people have died.

Players who participate in the event are asked to donate at least half of their winnings and must put up $5,000 to play in the tournament. Barkley told Sal Petruzzi, a TNT spokesperson, that he will donate all of his winnings to one of the two charities designated by the tournament. Barkley has been working as a NBA analyst for TNT.

Barkley has said he is playing in this tournament for charity purposes only and other people have stated he is sustaining from gambling. Jason Kidd, the point guard for the Dallas Mavericks, saw Barkley at a golf tournament in California and Barkley told him that he was “on the wagon.” Kidd also said “He’s strong. He didn’t gamble. I think Charles, once he decides not to do something, I think he’s pretty good at keeping his word.”

We will see next month if Barkley can keep his distance from gambling after attending and participating in the charity tournament.
